U.S. vs. Brazil Corn: Populations, Yield Ranges, and Why the Averages Differ
A response on planting populations, management intensity, and the yield distributions behind the national averages

A farmer wrote in response to our discussion of U.S. and Brazilian corn production, pressing on a detail the national averages leave out:
“You are saying the American output is almost double the Brazilian. Do we know what population they plant? If we’re only shooting for 100 bpa, I would not be planting 37,500 population and spoon-feeding it for max yield. If 100 was the top, I would probably drop to a 22,000 sweet-corn rate — and I wouldn’t be spoon-feeding it either. But in both scenarios, what’s the range behind 180 bpa: 140–220, or more like 250 and some less? So in South America, 60–140? We still need more information — it’s easy math once we get the details.
“We have a 207 APH. We’ve grown a 232 average on 5,300 acres of corn, a 246 average on 1,500 acres — and 165 bpa in ’24 and ’25. Just proof that we need more information.”
It’s a fair challenge — and the data give a satisfying answer.
The short answer: his instinct is right, almost to the seed
He’s asking exactly the right question, and the population numbers back it up. We do know what they plant. Brazilian safrinha growers — and the safrinha (second crop planted behind soybeans) is roughly three-quarters of Brazil’s total corn output — typically seed 55,000–65,000 per hectare, which works out to about 22,000–26,000 per acre. That is essentially the “sweet-corn rate” he said he’d drop to if 100 bpa were the ceiling. U.S. growers, by contrast, average 85,000–90,000 seeds per hectare, or roughly 34,500–36,500 per acre.
And he’s right about the spoon-feeding, too. The safrinha is planted January–March into residual soybean fertility, grown into the onset of the dry season, and managed with deliberately lighter inputs — because the grower knows moisture will likely run out before a 200-bushel crop could ever finish. NCGA-cited cost data show U.S. growers spending about twice as much per hectare on seed and carrying much heavier crop-protection bills. Brazilian growers aren’t leaving yield on the table; they’re making the same economic decision he described, just on 22 million hectares.

The ranges behind the averages
The U.S. average — a record 186.5 bpa in 2025 — is built more like his second scenario than his first. The fringe (dryland Kansas, Texas, the western Dakotas) comes in around 100–140, while the heart of the Corn Belt runs 220–250, with whole counties in Illinois averaging above 240 and plenty of irrigated and top-managed fields beyond that.
Brazil’s roughly 95-bpa national average blends smallholder and Northeast corn that can run 40–60, safrinha country like Mato Grosso around 100–120, and full-season first-crop corn in the south at 130–160, with the best commercial fields there pushing 8–9 tonnes per hectare (roughly 130–145 bpa) and beyond. So his 60–140 guess for South America is close to the mark; the U.S. spread is wider than 140–220 on both ends.

One more number worth having
farmdoc’s 30-year comparison found safrinha trend yields are actually climbing faster than U.S. trend yields — about 2.4 bu/year versus 2.1 — but with twice the year-to-year variability: the standard deviation from trend is 19% for safrinha versus 8% for U.S. corn, because everything hinges on when the rains quit.
His own numbers — a 207 APH, 232 across 5,300 acres, 246 on 1,500 acres, then back-to-back 165s in ’24 and ’25 — prove the same point at farm scale that the safrinha makes at national scale: averages hide the story, and the details are where the math lives.
