Trump Boosts Canada Tariffs After Ontario Ad
President raises duties by 10% following Ontario-sponsored anti-tariff campaign
President Donald Trump announced Saturday he is raising tariffs on Canadian goods by 10%, citing what he called a “hostile act” by the Ontario government after it sponsored an advertisement critical of his trade policies.
The escalation, posted on Trump’s Truth Social account, follows a week of tensions over the ad, which invoked former President Ronald Reagan as a champion of free trade and drew Trump’s ire. “Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now,” Trump wrote.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Friday that the province will pause its U.S. ad campaign starting Monday, following discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney aimed at restarting trade negotiations with Washington.
